The Requiem is certainly one of Mozart's most written about works. Its overwhelming drama matches the history of the composer, who died on 5 December 1791 leaving the score unfinished. It was his pupil Süssmayer who completed the Requiem at the request of Mozart's wife Constance. He worked on the orchestration, continued the "Lacrimosa", and completed the missing parts with the help of the last-minute instructions left by Mozart.
Cherubini's Funeral March was composed in 1820 for the funeral of the Duc du Berry, who was assassinated as he left the Paris Opera. It reflects the tradition of funeral music of the French Revolution. Note the cutting beats of the gong followed by the tremolo of the kettledrum, the sombre orchestral colours and painful dissonances which characterise a work intended to strike fear into the listener.
